Veena’s Story
I am Veena (42) and I work in the fields for daily wages. I am married with three children. I am also the Sarpanch (Village Head) for my village. I was elected under the women’s quota.
Though I hold the highest post in the village, I was unable to read and reply to the government orders and letters. Fear filled my heart as I was afraid that I might have to lose my job as I was uneducated. At this juncture, literacy classes started in my village. I started attending the classes with great enthusiasm. Because I had the interest to read and write, I was very active in my class and did my lessons faster.
Today, after six months of classes, I am able to read the letters and the government orders that come to the office. Literacy has given me the confidence even to reply to those letters. I have decided to send my three children to school so that their future might also be blessed. I thank literacy for giving me greater confidence and joy.
